Are MIDI Keyboards essential to hip hop/trap?

Ive been making all my melodies on the qwerty keyboard or in the piano roll, but ive noticed when I watch the "Jahlil Makes A Banger" or "Lex Luger Making A Beat", the video starts out and the melody pattern is already made. Is it because the used a keyboard for it but want to act like they do it all on the laptop?
This is making me really self-concious because my melody game is slacking.

A midi controller is essential for any genre lol... Of course some people like "programming" beats but the more hands on you can get, the more musical it will be, at last in my experience anyways..

You don't need a midi keyboard . . . It's a lot easier for those that know how to play, but if drawing in your melodies is what you prefer then by all means don't waste your money.

keyboards help the creative process a lot because you can play the melody on the spot and improvise to make it sound how you want. Working with the mouse and piano roll can be very tedious and can sound really robotic

I agree, so yes, it's essential lol.. A midi controller in no way shape or form is a waste of money, that's a pretty absurd comment actually lol..

a midi keyboard is not essential but it does help reduce wasted time when it comes to trying melodies before recording them, also if you can play some bit you tend to get better ideas

Agreed, which is why i said "hands on". Programmed beats and melodies always sound just like that, programmed. Of course turning off quantize can help but getting ideas on the fly is where it's at.

I know when i first started, i used a plugin that allowed me to use my pc Keyboard then i learned what a MIDI Keyboard was and the rest is history, i would never go back to trying to program or use my PC Keyboard again in this lifetime..

probably the best thing i ever bought, my whole approach to producing changed as well since i could improvise than be stuck with same workflow all the time

Good point, about the workflow that is.

It takes entirely to long to program VS compose. At least in my opinion anyways...

Ive found that the more steps you take (workflow) when the creative juices are flowing the bigger chance you have of loosing that groove or melody you had in your head when trying to move notes and stuff around in the midi lane..

Again, after buying one i can say without any doubts it's essential.. Of course before buying mine, i could easily say, no, it's not essential. Also i guess it depends on the person but to me, it's super essential, i would just stop trying to make music if i didn't have a midi keyboard.. Even a 25 key would work for me even though i use a 49..

It's the 1st commandment lol.. It should say, you must have at least a midi keyboard lol..

Although a MIDI keyboard isn't essential to making your music, it really helps you come up with creative ideas. Your melodies, bass lines and other ideas will sound much more musical if you create them on a keyboard than just entering notes on the piano roll

It helps so much. I was like one dude here same with program that acted like a keyboard. But once I got my akai 25 key, even with that I started to notice each time the music and melodies were better and my music would get better then as a result

I agree with what everyone said, I noticed a huge difference in creativity when I picked up my first midi as well. I actually like to use both, the comptuer keyboard and the midi at the same time
