Benzino Resigns From The Source

Ray Benzino, the Chief Brand Executive and Co-owner of The Source magazine, has resigned from his position at the company today (April 8).

"If me leaving the source is gonna help the magazine then I'll do it," the rapper told AllHipHop.com."The Source is an institution and is part of history; I want my kids and grandkids to enjoy the No. 1 Hip-Hop magazine for all time."

“I want to step down from the magazine and sell my stock effective immediately,” the rapper continued in a statement.

The rapper explained that there were a number of reasons for his departure, including his beef with Eminem, politics and other nearby business partnerships.

“This is a big step for me. I’ve been consumed too much with the whole conflict thing… the Eminem suit and I am sick of it. I don’t want to take away from what The Source has built up, but I got issues with The Source and magazines like that. Everyone is too politically correct. They’re not thinking about the little guy who can’t afford to pay for high priced ads. It’s like a monopoly,” he continued.

He also took issue with mogul Earl Graves and his Black Enterprise publication, which partnered with The Source when it sought to strengthen its financial status.

“Our other partner, Black Enterprises, is another reason why I’ve decided to leave. I don’t like how they perceive me. There are too many things that I don’t agree with, so I am moving on.”

Finally, Zino stated that he expects to start a new publication – a direct competitor of The Source – that will be free of his previous constraints.

“I plan on creating another magazine that has my voice which represents the little guy. It’s because of the manipulation of SoundScan and radio that Hip-hop is losing its edge,” he lamented. “I want to come out with a magazine that will reflect that. I want to start from the ground up and speak for the artists.”

While he's starting a mag, a rep for the rapper stateed that he has no beef with his former publication. "They're still cool," the rep told AllHipHop.com and revealed that the rapper and former partner Dave Mays would have a press conference today.

HAPPY DAYS ARE HERE AGAIN!!!!

I think he *finally* got the message due to the reception of his latest album.

Finally... and I probably still won't buy the Source. Unless they really step their game up. Keep it Hiphop and forget the other bs.

I find this line hillarious!! I could understand someone like Common, or Talib Kweli saying this, cuz they rap about concious hiphop, come from an underground source which is difficult to push on the radio....but Benzino's entire album was rapping about the same bullsh*t that every other artist on the radio is singing about (booty, gangster, clubbing, sex)...How the hell can he say that the radio is destroying hiphop, when his entire gimmick is based on the EXACT same product that the radio is pushing?? lol...what a clown.

This cat knows his albums didnt cut it for him. Hes gonna try another approach. I say look he put a successful magazine together. He made his money. Why isnt that enough? This cat needs to leave Em alone wipe the slate clean and start fresh. I suppose some things arent enough for people.

when did his new album come out? did it even sell. i dont remeber seein it on the billboard top 100.

Really? I remember seeing it in the source.... oh yeah.

Saw the title of the thread, thought he was retiring from rap. That would have been much better. Would have made my day. Oh well.

dont you know that people in the music news business are just failed "musicians" that are looking for any way to be part of what they love?

Wackzino wasn't saying all of this when he held that big ol press conference saying Eminem was a racist.

Zino is a punk. The Made Men are a bunch of Made Bytches.

I don't think he "PUT" The SOurce Together. The Source existed before he cma eon board as in invetsor bringing in needed capital. It's when he came on board like this that the orginal mind-squad left; because instead of him having come on baord as a business man investing capital, he started slipping in MADE MEN adverts and reviews using his authority to make it a "no choice" situation. That's when the Mag's credibility started fading.

Man i remeember seeing crazy spreads of MAde MEN and racking my head tryna figure out who they were. Needless to say, none of my homies knew the answer too -for years; then EM came along and let us know what time it was. Sad. B$ that you could read an issue of The Source for weeks/months on end.
