Ok I recently copped an mpc (2000xl) I have my little purchased drum kits that im messin with but thats only until ive saved up enough for my turntable and mixer.

What would be the most cost effective route to go? Lets say budget is around 600$ or so in that range. Im already eyeing the Numark TT-200 as a turntable..any pros or cons? But what would be the best mixer to get? I know some are 2-channel, 4-channel etc...Does this effect my setup?

My final setup would be simple

2000xl
turntble
mixer
syth
and MAYBE a sound module

depends. I like allen & heath and vestax best for sound. Turntables... doesnt make much of a difference as long as u got a decent needle.

edit: actually I forgot. The best sound quality comes from belt drive turntables. But they are horrible for scratching/mixing. So only go that route if its just for sampling.

i wouldnt say it matters honestly. If you dont plan on mixing scratching, just save money and get that 99$ numark portable turntable, and then get a nice mixer.... ps DO NOt get a belt drive turntable!

why is a mixer even necessary? you can just plug the turntable right into the left channel with a red and white audio to 1/4 input plug cable and be fine IMO.

it doesnt work that way. you need the amp for the turntable. anyway Id look into a low end direct drive turntable. You don't need a 1200 or a TTX but it doesn't hurt. I don't like dealing with belts they stretch over time.

this is real super noob stuff here, but I have a CD player turntable - anydifferences when using this as they tend to have internal digital amps in them?

If the mixer is only needed for it's amp ability I would assume that I'd be fine with my CD turntable.

right?

wrong?

Thanks guys. Yea no scratchin and mixing..strictly sampling. So im searchin up some more on the turntable. Any ideas on what mixers I should look into?

im not aware that mixers vary much in sound from mixer to mixer i could be wrong tho

if you're not mixing and scratching and don't plan on ever doing it don't waste your money on a turntable.. buy a decent phono pre-amp and it'll have better sound quality than a cheap mixer..

its not the mixer that matters but the phono pre-amp.. my dj mixer has three channels three band eq's and a couple other things.. cost me 370ish a few years back.. now with all of those components there is going to have to be some quality loss so they can make profit.. just like a dedicated fx box is better than an all in on fx box..

DO NOt get a belt drive turntable!
why? if he's not planning on scratching why not get a lower end audiophile deck? it will be higher quality than a deck designed for djing.. direct drive deck add rumble from the motor that the needle picks up.. a good belt drive deck has the motor seperated from the platter so the rumble is not picked up.... that's why all audiophile turntables are belt drive..

heh...my other post in here vanished. Anyway, I recommend a Technics 1200 (mk2, mk3) or 1210 (the black joints) on the TT side. Far as mixers, I own a Vestax PMC06 'pro', it's nothing special sound quality wise. I would have to recommend Rane mixers such as the Empath.

But if you are not planning on using it for any DJ applications, I would skip the middle man and either get a TT fitted with an auxillary and/or SPDIF I/O. No mixer is needed if you don't plan on cueing, mixing or scratching.

EDIT: Okay, just checked...gonna have to eat some of my words here. In your case I would look into some of the new Numark products. I just checked Sweetwater.com and they had TT's with USB ports...that's what's up!!

The numark portable is a belt drive turntable :)

I use one of those and TTXs. I really like the TTX alot...but in your case I would probably get the Pt-01. U dont need a mixer at all with that one and it sounds pretty good.

Thanks for more info ! The reason why I was considering a mixer because I was told that its good to have so you can eq the sample prior to recording it. Also you can get the sample at its loudest point without distorting it (by using the mixers LEDs). Is this the case or not?

Well, EQing your samples not a big deal if your going to track out your beat in the end ne way. Its probably better not to use ne EQ on the way in because your samples may sound a bit lower in level.

Pete rock does the same thing with eq on a mixer for his samples.....

all you need is a little preamp to go from the turntable to the mpc, no need for the mixer

You dont need a mixer at all, buy the Numark PT01 its like $100, its got a built in preamp so you just plug it into your MPC. Its also portable so you can take it diggin if ya want.
