RAPPER:
I have found that most Rappers are not open to any of the ideas of the Producer. They come in the studio with a close mind its there way or no way. Some want to give orders instead of listening to the Producer and compromising is out of the question. Some get mad when you tell them that something is wrong (like there off beat or your voice changed in the third verse its not consistent with the other two your tones don't not match).

ARTIST:
An Artist is the opposite he's willing to listen to your input an try what your talking about to see if it will work or he'll do it his way then try it your way and pick the best of the two.

I have also have RAPPERS practice for about 5 hours on a song and flow to the track the same way they practiced it.

I have also had ARTIST practice for the same 5 hours and have a varity of ways he/she can pick to flow over the track.

Can anyone tell me what have you notice as a Producer??
What is the your take on a Rapper vs an Artist?

I don't have that problem... I guess cuz I'm an emcee too.. they accept my input more. Or we can eventually work something out cuz theres a respect there on both levels.. emcee and producer. I don't really work with cats like that tho anymore.. I work for myself.. solo.. and maybe a few collabs here and there. I'd rather just sell somebody a beat and let them have at it.. and spend time on my own projects. ****.. I have to worry more about snakes nowadays than ig'nant phuckers... I've been snaked way too many times.

A rapper is an artist in his own right. Let's not take that away from them. However, there are rappers with different levels of artistry. Like Blade mentioned, its hard for any type of artist to accept criticism from someone who's opinion they don't respect. Its up to you as the producer to gain that respect, and their confidence. Use positive reinforcement. Always suggest changes, instead of making demands. Never tell the artist that a take was bad, or wrong. Suggest that they build on that take by adding whatever it was you think is lacking. You want the artist to be comfortable, not nervous, or intimidated. This way you will get the best performance out of them.

I do encourage the Rapper and the Rapper/Artist in a positive way but its the Rappers close mind that hurts them at times.
I just 't want the Rapper or Rapper/ Artist to leave with a product they are happy with.

I don't want to find out that it was something they did which ,I brought to there attention but, they did'nt want to listen or correct whats wrong . They just wanted to leave as is. I just don't want them telling me why you did'nt tell me about it. I think RESPECT is me telling them something is wrong here not just because I'm not also a Rapper.
I don't want them to think i'm trying to get over on them. I'm trying to build a positive relationship for more business in the future.

I'm not a Rapper/Producer. I'm a Producer/Composer but if I hear something that the Rapper/Artist may be doing that may hurt his/her Rep. as well as mine I have to let him know. If they want to proceed I'm open minded to see how it comes out and ties together. Who knows I might be surprised. I don't want Rapper/Artist giving me a bad name based on he/she being a hard head when i pointed out the problem or problems the first time.

Is this an EGO thing with Rappers?

Blade can you explain this to me?
Your a emcee and a producer.

Ikemuda and Blade:

Why is it that us as producers have to pamper and handle the Rappers and Rappers/Artista like a delicate flower and spare there feeling from the truth like babies or soften the truth, boost his/her ego, while there in the booth spitting curse words, talk about who they are going to kill, shoot, hurt, stab, how many women they sleep with, how many kilos they have..... and so on?

I know some of what I stated may be the true lifestyle for some Rappers but you mean to tell me that they can't take the truth about what there doing wrong on the track? Its not like I have a gun to there head.

I have worked with alot of local Rappers and Rappers/Artist in the New Orleans/ Houston area. Some are open minded some are close minded.

Can anyone give me the Rappers or Rapper/Artist point of view.... anybody?

Mostly the Rappers point of view because the Rapper/Artist is open minded not all the time but, most of the time when it comes to criticism.

You're right. We producers do have to stroke egos a lot. But trust me singers are a whole lot worse. A whole different beast.... For producers at our level, most of our clientel are gonna most likely be cats with minimal studio experience, or experience putting together songs. I get rappers in the stu all the time who can freestyle for an hour straight, but can't lay a 16 bar verse on a song. I end up having to coach 'em. Sometimes they'll get taken back when I tell them to change a word, or rewrite a line to make everything flow better. Once they see the improvement, they respect my advice in the future. Now, rappers I've dealt with a few times will ask my opinion off the bat. They trust me.

Its time we get our RESPECT because us producers are looking out for the best interest of BOTH the Rappers and OURS.

I argee with all of what you've said because I have experenced it also. I've had a rappers tell me that he thought it would be easy because it looked like it was easy from all the videos that hes seen on BET & MTV.
He did'nt know that it required so much work (bars & listening to the beat) when free styling he kept his own beat in his head.

Last I heard he stopped writing which, is a shame he had some good lyrics and concepts.

Another guy stayed in the booth for 45mins. trying to get the last 1/2 (half) a measure right to his verse. This was after some other Rappers and I rewrote his lyrics and told him how to recite it.

Now, ask me if he got it right?

The ansewer: NOOOOOOOOO!

I guess he was hoping that the HANDS OF GOD was going to touch him and he was going to spitt FIRE ON THE MIC!!!
He insisted on rapping his way eventhought we gave him the gudience that he needed.

I don't know.
Maybe his Brain Froze or Locked UP.

Hey Blade what part of town are you on in H-Town?
I'm on the SW side.

that reminds me of the movie deep cover when th cop ask the black cops whats the difference bettween a black man and a nigger. well to me there is no difference with a rapper and artist just the fact anybody can rap....i know alot of boyz thats rapp every day.....but your only a artist when what you do is clear enuff for someone else to feel or see what your talking about.....no matter what your talking about...... now whats the difference of a rapper and lyricsist then thats when its as different as the sides of a dime.

O yea lets not get on singers or matter fact lets not get on female singers...........my boy calls me the Dame Dash of the studio cause ill tell ya straight up im a *** hole when it comes to recording cause i feel or i take 100 percent blame if a song isnt done right or sounds right........I feel being a producer is like be a coach of any sport and just like sports your gona have Vets who know the deal or guys that understand one system from a past team and need to just learn yours and its on and poppin fast but then you have the rookies the guys that know jack**** about putting a song together or in basketball terms running the play correct.. At this point i like to work with artist that are young and new to the studio cause if you put a 15 to 18 year kid in a studio and flash a few lights and move a few buttons they think its the best thing to slice bread and are down to listen to what you say thats got to be done to get everything done right. Most of the time thats the kids with no bills or no major worries they just wanna spit.....now when you get the guys thats alil old there are not with the wait or take ya time thing with music they wanna do it there way or how they think it should be done....o yea i hat e the ones that want to try to make a beat too.......i call my studio the Gym aka the beat factory. i had to learn how to be nice to girls when they come in the studio cause they have called me a *** whole or too pushy....one even wanted to fight me and only then did her song come out good. i tell them its my job to push them to get the best out of them. I think they still think its a game or fun or something...i play no games in my studio...if we laying down free styles and you mess up or wanna joke in and out of the both its ok but when the money on line .....its game time lets get it done and done good.....im not a controling producer......i will tell a artist what i feel and ask them to see my opinion and give a try and if they dont like well do it there way.....but i am a bitccch when it comes to getting things right but im not picky on stuff i will let stuff slide but i hate when people think its a game when you up in the studio and not work.....

Man str8 up... I don't even work with people like that anymore.. maybe in the future. But they better have hella talent for me to even consider.. or put up with their BS. Like I said earlier.. I usually don't have that problem, cuz theres a level of respect. I don't even like extending nowadays cuz I've been snaked way too many times.. and nobody else is gettin a free ride off me. I don't even really waste my time on snakes or egomaniacs anymore.. seeing as I'm tryin to make it myself. But thats the same ole story.. I have an example of a cat like that.. but I doubt you peeps wanna hear it. So I'll end it here. Oh ya, I'm up in the North -- Northwest Side of town!! Peace-1!
