I saw 50 cent's movie yesterday. I think a lot of reviewers are saying something negative about Get Rich or Die Tryin' to say something negative.
If you look at the film objectively with an open mind, on a scale of 1-10 it's probably deserving of a 7. That's being honest. I don't like 50 cent or his music, I think his rapping style is boring, but I'm not going to jump on the bandwagon and say his movie was complete trash when it truthfully wasn't.
The score was great and the music really matched the themes/scenes throughout the film. The acting was above-average, definitely not 2/10 like some people have been saying. I'd give the acting in the movie 8/10. I'd say most of the acting was good or even great if it weren't for a few scripting oddities here and there. The cast was great. Still the usual common black actors, but it was good to see that they cast a few newcomers in some serious roles (50 cent's Aunt for example).
The last thing, which I think a lot of people are in conflict about, is the direction of the movie. Some people are disappointed that GRODT didn't focus on 50 cent's musical motivation or hip hop in general. Some people think it glorifies gang violence and drugs. I think a lot of those people are wrong or completely missed the point of the movie.
Throughout GRODT, 50 cent is shown to have an interest in hip hop. However, it's not the cliche "eat, breathe, and sleep music," type of addiction. It seems like he goes to music for a release. At times he doesn't even care about music or he gives up. It's not the center of the world for him like most people would expect and I think that's where people are missing the point of the film.
A lot of reviewers are going into analysis of the film from the perspective that it's a movie about 50 cent's music career or his obssession with music, when really it's just a music about a man's life, not really focusing on music or drugs at all. To my suprise, 50 cent doesn't glorify drugs at all. If anything, he shows his natural aversion to the drug world and how he was thrust into it (like many people with few options in life) to find a better life for himself. Drugs and music are just parts of the story that are meant to show the larger picture, 50 cent's search for his identity. I know that sounds cliche but if you want to look at GRODT as not bringing anything new to the table (as far as themes/settings), you might as well say that about 99% of the movies that come out today. Most major films today are remakes of old films, used up ideas, or adaptations from novels. Hardly do you see any completely original major movies being brought to the table these days. Why do people choose to focus on GRODT and put it in that light saying how unoriginal it is? I think it's because of their own prejudices.
If you go into the movie with an open mind, not expecting anything at all, you'll actually realize that it's pretty good. If you go into the movie with all sorts of bias, hate, or notions about what it should/shouldn't be you're going to be disappointed. I didn't expect anything from 50 cent or his movie and that's why I enjoyed it.
