How do I make my 808's more "crunchy"?

Im trying to get my 808's to have more of a rugged, "crunchy", distorted sound to them. Are there any plug-ins for FL or kits with 808's like this? I know Soundtoys Decapitator can help me achieve this sound but it doesnt work on Fruity Loops. Is there another Fruity Loops friendly plug in similar? Here's a reference to the kind of drum sound I'm talking about.

Experiment with
- Fruity Fast Dist
- Maximus
- Fruity Limiter

Those are all stock plugins inside FL. Just mess around with those until you get your desired "rugged crunchy" sound youre looking for.
Definitely throw your 808 into Parametric EQ 2 and roll off frequencies where needed. Its all bout experimenting. Theirs hundreds of videos on Youtube with tutorials that "teach" you how to Mix and Eq Kicks and 808's. Here an example

Is there any particular reason why you say that soundtoys decapitate doesn't work in FL? If you want a distorted sound, add some distortion?!

The plug-in isnt compatible with FL or I dont know how to get it to function in that DAW.

Try applying overdrive/distortion to the sample prior to pitch shifting.

Try maximizing and compressing it. That would give it a "crunchy-distorted" feel.

Or maybe find a "Crunchy" kick and layer it over the 808. Side-Chain the 808 to the kick and resample. That way, the initial impact of the 808 will have a crunchy feel and the tail will have good clear bass.

OrOr, try creating it yourself! using a combo of sine waves and square waves. That usually gets me a good "crunchy" bass sound.

Hope this helps!

I got the Decapitator to work in FL by putting the .dll file in my VST folder. This is the plug-in I wanted to use to give my 808 that effect I was looking for. The Fruity Fast Dist also worked.

I like using bitcrushers on 808s
