Alright so, im a rapper and I want to produce beats the only problem is I SUCK at making beats, I tried once before and the beats were so bad that they sounded like a barney theme song, so I gave up trying, but now after ive seen all of your guys work at fp I realized that it probabaly wasnt because I was bad but because I had no idea what I was doing (I might have been me sucking also), so I wanted to ask you guys some general questions about beat making, what all do you guys do to make a beat from start to finish? What are some tips and tricks you guys use? How do make it all fit together? and finally what are all the basic elements of a beat? I wish I had some examples of my work but I dont. Also, I dont have an MPC so it would be best if we could talk in software terms like mainly in fl studio . Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,

Oh yeah, i put it in rap/hip hop because there is no beat making section in FP, that im aware of.

Alright even tho the question is really vague i'm in a generous mood and i'll try help u out a little bit. however my answers are probz gonna be pretty short so it will probz require a bit more googling by u bro

what all do you guys do to make a beat from start to finish?
I use FL Studio. If you're going the software way ur probably gonna wanna use a DAW such as FL Studio, Cubase, Ableton Live, Logic, Reason etc.
Also theres a free DAW called 'reaper' which is actually pretty good even tho its free. So check that out.
What are some tips and tricks you guys use?
lol dunno how to answer that its a really vague question

How do make it all fit together? and finally what are all the basic elements of a beat?
basic elements: drums (kick, snare/clap, hi hat), bassline, then other instruments will depend on the type of track.

Some tips I can give you for a beginner:
Keep reading forums, get on other forums which are more focused towards beginners, such as www.warbeats.com

Whichever DAW u choose LEARN IT PROPERLY. Don't switch to and forth trying to find the one which will make ur beats hot. Find one which has a layout/interface which is most comfortable to you and STICK WITH IT.

Learn to analyze music, this means when ur listening to songs try break it down into individual instruments.

Go into the 'getting started' section of this forum and read some of the posts there.

And yeah if your using FL Studio warbeats is invaluable. I learnt a lot from it when i was first starting out.

Use the tips posted above, and practice. You're first 10 beats might not even sound good, but keep learning about how to use your program.

Look up youtube videos on how to make beats, and browse internet articles. since there's no time limit, take it slow. Dedicate an hour to messing around with drums. Next, synths. Explore.

Once you get the hang of it, you'll see it starts to click, and it's a process and a formula, mixed with as much creativity as you can.

your beats are going to suck for a while. keep practicing and listening to the music you want to produce. giving us an example of what kind of direction you would like to take musically would be helpful too

do you guys think there is a stage where it takes talent and not practice, I mean if I cant do it I can't do it right. To me Its not as much about learning the daw as it is the logical thinking involved in making a beat, I just don't have the creative musical talent to make a beat. What do you guys think? Is this a skill where you can develop over time or does it all rely solely on talent?

It's a skill. Talented people just get there sooner, but you can get to that level as well. Just not as soon as those with the natural inclination.

i think of producing like playing basketball. you suck until u understand the fundamentals once you get that down its just practicing until you become great at it. I don't believe in raw talent I believe some people just get it before others

lol at giving up after one beat. do you really think you're gonna get good that fast?

It sounds to me like you didnt enjoy making the beat. I think this is an important aspect. Cause no matter how wack my first beats were I did love making them and thats why I kept going.

Well I just made a beat and it came out pretty good actually, its nothing amazing but you can rap to it. Is there a way i can post it up on fp so you guys can hear it?

you can attach it...or upload it on a site like divshare and post a link on here.
