Hi guys,

I was just wondering if anyone knew any tips on how i can go about practicing making complex multisyllabic rhymes? For example, potatoes - don't hate those, no way bro, rotate slow. All i can think of is really, really , really basic ones. Then again, i only got into rapping properly a few weeks ago lol. Any tips?

Pretty much what you are doing. Find words that rhyme with what you are looking to rhyme with. No secret.

Sorry, i meant the example about the potatoes one was an example i found online.

I actually still can't make complex ones like that, yet. That was the query of the post

also, anyone got any tips/exercises as to how i can increase my vocabulary and rhyming words? Beginning to run out of words lol.

1) Write a line
2) Take the last word of that line
3) Plug it into a rhyming dictionary (Rhymezone is a good one that you can use online. Google it, I can't post links yet)
4) Find another word that both rhymes and that you can fit into the end of the second line in your song.

Rhyming dictionaries are the only reason I haven't pulled my hair out while writing lyrics (yet). Rhymezone also includes phrases as well if that is what you are looking for.

Read a book.
Its really not hard, see, look.
once youve locked up the bars, you need hooks.
Then you go rock the bars. rock em hard, get re-booked.
Cats schemes be steam cooked, soft,
they seem shook..

Not the greatest example, but you get it.
Read books, study rhyme schemes, pick up a thesaurus and a dictionary daily and flip through for a couple minutes. Its all really easy stuff as far as nailing the basics.
And above everything else- write, write, write!! you wont get better if your not practicing and consistently pushing yourself.
Hope that helps....

Yeah, i guess..practise..practise. I really just want to be using complex multies like the potato example i posted earlier. I keep umaking really basic ones lol. *Sigh*

Thanks for the reply. I checked out rhymezone and it seems pretty good. Is it just me or do they have a multisyllabic feature? For example, i entered the word "ruler" into it and it gave me a couple of single rhyming words that rhymed with it and then it showed something that looked like it was a multi of the word "ruler". .. It displayed the word "water cooler". Can "water cooler" be used as a multi for the word "ruler"

Here is the link:
RhymeZone: ruler

Dude, I hate to sound like a complete d!ck, but if you cant tell when words rhyme and need to ask a question like that, then all hope is probably lost....
Hint- cooler and ruler rhyme, both syllables in fact. Multi= more than one.
Take it one step further;
Thats a big water cooler.
to measure it is gonna take a lotta rulers....
There you took two syllables that rhymed and then stretched it to four syllables that rhyme....

Something i found really helpful when i was starting out was just free-styling a certain syllable for as long as i could go starting with just the ending syllables so repetition, exhibition, inhibition dream team scheme lean mean fiends need cream. and then when i would run out i would sit there and just think of other words as in when i broke the freestyle i would just make the list bigger and go to a new syllable.

Another thing is read like people have been saying doesn't matter what it is, could be some comics like calvin and hobbes, your brain will just take in words religiously.

Last tip listen to people who are good at it and naturally you will learn from them to, MF Doom, Illogic, Atmosphere, the doppelgangaz nas, eminem on infinite, del the funky homosapien and many more. all very good at the multisyllabic rhyme. Just keep at it.

Great advice here from beenjammin...
I would add copywrite and old school cage (namely "movies for the blind") to that list as well.

LOL, dude..i did know that but i was kinda hoping that was part of some sort of multi feature...I was just being lazy and hoping it would work when i already knew it was completely wrong and just off..

split it into syllables then make sure you only change the beginning consonants, easy enough - po ta to, so stay slow. or treat groups of syllables as words - po taTo, blow plaTo. you can ignore consonants, most don't consider that multis but it usually makes your line sound a little smoother - potato, goats make Rome. Also consider which consonants sound similar - t & d for example. You can also accent some vowels to force rhymes.

Edit: also the simplest way just change the consonants at the start of the word. potato has no perfect rhymes without forcing vowel accents.

Dude, i just tried making one with one of your examples. I split the word consideration into two syllables (consider ration). I then made rhymes for each word e.g. disorder nation.
What do you think?

Here's a line i just wrote with it. I know, it's shit lol. I only started rapping a week ago lol.

"all i'm asking is for a lil consideration
but your acting like we're all in a disorder nation"

Its not bad but its not really great flow it out the last line doesnt have enough syllables in it for it to feel right to me id do something like

"all im asking for is a little consideration
but your acting like what im asking for is just a bigger installation"

fills up the space for me and little and bigger though they dont rhyme it adds to the flow and play and adds rhyme value to the whole.

"all im asking for is a little consideration
Destroy the nation council the middle omit the masons"

just feel like rhyming with a word with little in the next lines helps it out a lot.

exercise- Take the words "little consideration" and rhyme every syllable that it has-

(A) Little consideration,
(for the) Brittle incineration,
(were in the) middle of proliferation,
(with) fickle considered nations.

Just stretch em as far as you can for as long as you can. After a while itll become second nature..

well, as long as you quit doing that....

Yeah, i know the flow was terrible. It was rushed and i was just trying to come up with an example. It's weird..i get a kinda buzz from creating multi's. Like the whole process of trying to come up with one and then you hit "eureka"..lol.

Hye, that's quite useful. Thanks!! Haha, i was looking for a easy way out! My bad. It more self satisfactory when your using you own head for rhymes and not any sort of rhyming dictionary..it seems..

Anyways, thanks everyone for the help!!

No problem and ya i feel you its like fitting a puzzle together but you got to make the final picture as you go.

what the... keep the vowels and consonants the same apart from the start (change the capitals), e.g. Conside(no r - just eh or uh sound) Ration.

The best way to progress is to continue doing what you're doing. The fact that you realize your rhymes should be multisyllables is a great step forward within itself. Because unfortunately there are alot of rappers today that still haven't grasped that concept. I have a good example of the multisyllable method put into practice on my song "Nex Gen" on soundcloud. Hope this helps!

Lol...my bad. Thanks for spotting that out. I totally didn't clock that tbh...

One of the best tools to find multi rhymes is Rhyme Genie.

Its basically a very advanced rhyming dictionary with an intelligent rhyme that finds multi-syllabic rhymes automatically:
