I know there are a zillion MotifES vs. Triton vs. Fantom threads on here, but no M3 vs. MotifXS threads (yet).

Has anyone tried both? Any impressions? Likes/dislikes of either? I went to a local store recently and played with a Motif XS8 a little bit, but they didn't have an M3.

I'm not a pro musician by any stretch, just a dabbler who likes to create sequences and sound FX mainly. I recently picked up a MicroKORG and have been having a lot of fun with it, but would like something a bit more capable (and w/full sized keys). ;)

I owned a Korg 01/Wfd years ago, and liked it. I've never had a Yamaha.

honestly.. i never really played the M3 to much depth.. but when i was messin around wit that thing.. it was beastly.. i liked it, its just da price is kinda krazy, nd i heard that its kinda hard to learn everythin to get the most out of it..

never played wit da XS

Ive Used both of them and the the Motif XS To The M3 because it has a smaller memory at 256mb and 64mb Sampling memory as standard and the prefer the sounds in it and it has 4 extra sliders and Knobs for mixer then the older motif ES
But on the side the motif only has semi-wieghted and if your a piano player like me you will prefer the M3 Weighted keys.

Another choice i really is the Roland V-Synth GT Which Is my Favorite

both of the 88 key versions of those two keyboards have weighted keys like a piano..

played with both, own a motif es already. the motif xs improved on the synths over the es but the Korg IMO owns it in that dept along with pads. the acoustic stuff on the other hand, i think the yamaha does it more justice. the Korg is more inspiring to make a whole track with to me because of the touchscreen among other things..

played the m3

yeah i ve got to really say this, Korg has really put together a board with great sounds and hot drums , if thats what your leaning towards, i purchased a Xs 6 bout 4 weeks ago ..and its a well competitor to the M3 , but for me i look forward user friendly boards, that it wouldnt take you 3 months to put together a hot sequence. Now ive also played the m3 and if it wasnt for that price, and half the **** on there that i dont need ...i would get it for the sounds ...mos def.....

Try out both. I have played both and would be torn to decide. I always thought Korg's pianos weren't my taste, but they upped their game, likewise, the Motif syn th basses never seemed as deep and phat as Korg, but now Yamaha has upped their game also. Either way, can't really go wrong

I'm more of a Motif XS guy myself but I messed around with the M3 and every since I've been doin a comparison. They are both stupid so I would say, get your money right and get both. Get the Xs and the M3 module. No Limitations. Good Tools, Good Work right? Huh?.....

Hehe, the classic answer to any "which widget should I get, X or Y?" "Get both!" ;)

I got a Motif XS6. Enjoying it so far. The store didn't have an M3 but they had a Fantom which I played with but I liked the Motif better.

As for getting both, I don't need 2 workstations, and the wife wouldn't let me anyway. It'll just be the XS, a Microkorg, and soft synths (take up no space other than the lappy).

Ive only played wtih the m3 once and thought it was decent but I like the Tritons better. the XS is really dope sounds are great but i hate the motif interface. id probabaly jump on the xs rack

i feel the same way

thats kind of what turns me off on the motif in general i hate navigating through it but the sounds are crazy

I am hoping to come into money this week...............
My purchase plans in order of priority:

Korg M3
Yamaha Motif XS
Roland MV8800

Like any equipment purchase, your selection will be based on the amount of cash (or credit) you have, then you consider your current equipment and try and compliment it.

That is reason I've selected the M3 first, I believe the XS is a little redundent given I have a Roland Fantom X7 & a MO6.

The XS is bread & butter, while the M3 is meat & jelly.

If I already had a MO6, I wouldn't bother to get a XS unless I was selling the MO6. That would be really redundant to have both with alot of overlapping presets. Sure the XS would give you a better interface, and sampling, but the sounds.......you probably have at least 75% of them already, minus the totally new ones

1. I dont sell or even trade equipment any more, the parting sorrow is just too much.

2. The XS has a cool little button to help modulate your sound.

3. youngjboy is right...............but equipment lust is a hard thing too ignore.

sorry I am just going to have to buy all that I can afford, redundant or not.

check this out..............keyboards and stuff I dont play any more, but keep plugged in.

M1, D50, Wavestation, CS1X, JP8000, Triton Le, Karma, SP606, WavestationSR, nanopiano................the list goes on and on.

I keep a core set for day to day use:

Fantom X, V-Synth, micro X..........and soon M3, Motif XS, MV8800.

I record through the Korg D3200, (I have retire my ADAT's). While I only edit/master on the Mac G4.
