I am in the process of buying a drum machine, and I need your opinion and comments. Also Pro/Cons on the one you chose.

Here are the choices for my budget:
M-audio Trigger Finger
Akai MPD16
Akai MPD24
Korg PadKontrol

please help me decide your opinion is needed

also if you have any other ideas for a drum machine please leave a link and their pros and cons

Thank you in advance:D

i would say the korg only because i own one

I've personally never had exierence with this. The Akai MPD 16 is the easiest to use because you dont need to isntall the drivers.

If i were you i would save up for a year even if you have to and just get an Akia MPC 1000 or Akai MPC 2500.

lol it wouldnt take me a year but maybe a couple of months

and i do appriciate all the comments thx guys

I use the PadKontrol. My buddy who lives around the corner has the MPD24.

The MPD24 looks more professional, is considerably larger and heavier. It looks like something that should be in a professional studio or on a stage. The backlit screen is very nice and shows quite a bit of data. The pads feel great, and are characteristic of the MPC pads. You feel a soft click when you push them down all the way.

The Korg PadKontrol is smaller, lighter, and very cool looking. It's pads are different from the MPC style pads in that they dont depress the way the MPD pads do. This isn't a bad thing, the pads feel great, and the fact that they light up when you play them actually helps my timing a bit.

IMO this biggest and most important difference is the fact that the MPD24 pads will transmit the aftertouch via Midi where the Korg pads will not. This is important if you are going to be using it to play long orchestral notes and other synth samples with it.

The PK also has a mini-Kaoss pad on it. This thing can be configured to control whatever paramaters you want, but the stock flam and roll settings on some of the drums are great, I love it.

The MPD24 has way more sliders and knobs. If you like configuring these to map to your MIDI application you will want the MPD24. The MPD24 also has MIDI controls for start, stop, and record. This is important if you want to control your recording from the MPD. You can also do this from the PK, but you will need to map some pads to do this.

Overall the MPD24 is a better and more professional unit for all around MIDI control.

I could have taken the PK back to GC and gotten the MPD24, but I chose to stay with the Korg.

The reason? I love the PK pads for certain things. Playing keys and other melodic samples are easier on the PK than on the MPD. You barely have to touch the PK to get it to register a note. If you upload some scenes with scales the PK becomes a great alternative to a keyboard. Chords and scales are effortless and easy to play. the pads that light up give great feedback to exactly when you are pressing that pad. It might not seem like the lights serve any real purpose, but when you find a great pattern it is much easier to repeat and manipulate that pattern when you can SEE it easier..... thats the way it is for me anyways....

Good luck with your decision.

i have a pad kontrol and i really like it. If I were buying a new drum pad then it would be a Touch Pad vs. Endless turn knobs decision.

I have padKONTROL and I'm glad i bought it.
plus it comes with lots of software programs.

dam...im trying to decide between MPD24 and the PK. still not sure which one ima go with. hmmmm

It seems nobody bothered to mention that none of the devices listed are "Drum Machines".

I was just about to do that...but you beat me to it...LOL

Lol Word Up!!!

I Can't Load Scenes On My Pk Though.. I'm Connected Usb... Does It Have To Be Controlled By Midi Wires?

I have the Trigger Finger, PadKontrol and MPD 24 and I would have to say the MPD and PadKontrol are by far the best. For different reasons though! Before you say, why do you have all 3? I use the PadKontrol as a control device for my laptop and Live 6 (See www.beatwise.com for an expalnation) or type in stray411 in youtube and check out what this dude did for the padkontrol it is fukcing sick!

I use the MPD for all drum programming since the PK is used for controlling Ableton Live and I really do not use the trigger finger at all anymore, I just dont like it that muck, so it sits in my studio.

Check out stray411 on youtube and beatwise.com and if you use live you will want the padkontrol.

PEACE!

Anyone that has any particular experience with using the PadKontrol with OS X? I reccon these types of devices would be easier using with Windows, or it might just be me struggling with my piece and my limitations on the music technical side. Using Ableton Live 5, so I'm defiantly checking out your links kcsherrell.

Thanks.

EDIT: Beatwise(dot)com doesn't work properly for me. Anybody else got that problem of it not loading?
