I recently bought an MPC1000 off this guy. It looked to be in perfect condition and when we tested it out it worked fine. Well, I put it away for a while and 6 months later I go to use it and the compact flash slot doesn't work. When I insert the memory card...the screen blanks out and I hear a slight squeal...high frequency sound. When I put the memory card in with the MPC off and then turn it on...I don't hear the squeal, but the screen stays blank!!!!

Anyone have any clue what to do???

Thanks in advance.

Nah...I have two cards. The original card...and a 256 mb card. They both do the same thing....

I would send it to Akai or VST service for repair. Then, I would pay the extra dollars to have the pads upgraded and then get the new JJ OS that is coming in December.

might be some cheap ram in the mpc , open it take a look at it and if need be replace it.

thanks for the replies. The dude I bought it from said he installed a bigger hard drive...which I don't even know if that's possible...so yeah I should open it up and see what's in there.

I agree with the guy above. I would remove the memory and also remove the hard drive and retest the MPC. If this doesn't work, I would just send it to VST Service or Akai to get an estimate of the repair costs. The estimate may be about $50 or so and if you choose to get it fixed, the money you paid goes towards the cost of the repair.

More memory is def an option for the 1000.... The hard drive sounds bad at this point. I have had HD's get stuck and do what you describe.. I would def remove the added HD and go from there..... There is an adapter avail from Akai that enables the use of aftermarket bigger Hd's.... Good luck.....

It is suggested nothing bigger than a 80gb hd and there is a list of tested hds on the akai site as well as ram so i would just pop it open ( just a few screws ) and check to see what is in it and you might have to replace the ram and hd ( maybe a 100.00 total cost ) sorry to hear this but if you can get it to run its worth saving and not spending the extra money having someone look at a problem you know you can fix.

What he said......

I meant to add that since the memory was added later, you may already have the adapter..... Keep us updated...

All your replies are greatly appreciated...been really busy, but I'm about to pop it open right now and take a look! I'll let you know the results...

Okay...so I took out the hard drive. If anyone else needs to know how to do this I found a good you tube video....

they won't let me give you the link...well do a search on youtube for it.

Looks like the hard drive is a 12.07GB IBM Travelstar... So I guess the guy didn't have the 40 gigs installed like he told me...whatever. I'm thinking this is the stock hard drive, but I'm not positive. I checked AKAI's website as suggested and it said that the Hitachi Travelstar 80gig HD can be used... IBM and Hitachi must be one in the same...

Okay...so I just powered up the MPC without the hard drive installed....inserted the memory card...and DAMN IT....same problem....that damn squeal....

The slot where the memory would go is empty...so there is no aftermarket memory installed; so removing that is not an option...

I guess I'll have to call Akai and see what they say...

Any more suggestions?? Thank you in advance....

Naw..dude installed that hard drive himself. You basically did as much as you can. I would call Akai or VST service for a repair estimate.

Sorry to hear it.... Sucks when things don't work out.... It is like me buying a new MPC on Saturday only to find out it has the old pads...

Well if anyone is interested....maybe this will help someone out in the future who has this same problem...

I called Akai today. The technician says he's seen this problem before. Basically someone jammed the compact flash card in too hard and some of the pins inside got bent...so this causes the MPC to go crazy when the CF is inserted now. He referred me to VST, which luckily for me is local here in LA. I need to buy a replacement Compact Flash Board. The part is $120.00 and the labor is another $30.00...OUCH!!! I'll probably try to get the part cheaper somewhere else and install it myself... Hopefully this fixes the problem...

Thanks to all that replied.

VST is located at 1270 Lincoln Ste 100 in Pasadena. They're one of only two places in the country that are authorized technicians for AKAI. 626-794-8196...and no I don't work for them...haha..

StickyRikky, did you ever replace your CF board?

I was just gonna say,

I had damn near the SAME exact issue with my MPC1000. Got it used, it was basically in like new condition. Took it home, as soon as i put the flash card in, the screen went black. Only, with mine, if I took the card out, it worked fine.

Turns out there was a bent pin. I actually took a bobby pin and bent the pin back into place myself and now the things works as good as new. Depending on how bad the pins look, you may be able to bend them back yourself. Just get a flashlight, some needle-nose pliers (or if your bootleg like me, a bobby pin) and do it yourself. You have to be very careful because the pins are sensitive so you have to watch not to bend other pins out of place in the process.

Anyway, this may be able to save you some $$$, not sure how bad your pins are though.

Good luck.

Hey thanks all you guys for the suggestions. No, I haven't brought it in yet to get repaired...I was livin' in Locash for a while, if you know what I mean. I got a fatty paycheck on the way, so if the bobby-pin trick doesn't work (thanks for the suggesting Mr. Freeze) then I'm gonna bring it down to VST and have those guys perform some surgery. Updates to come....

Hell yeah, good news! So I fixed the problem myself...I did as Mr. Freeze suggested and bent the pin back into place. I used a nail file though because no bobby-pin was available! Anyways...just wanted to share the good news and thank everybody who contributed to this thread. Wow, I'm fu**ing stoked right now. It was such an easy fix, I can't help but feel slightly stupid for not figuring this out on my own...
