Dj Don Cannon: "Cannon!"

I know how I feel about them, but I was wondering how you guys feel about tagging your audio logo at the beginning of every beat you make.

There are definite pro's and cons.

it identifies the genius behind the dope beats.

before i got into producing, i barely realized the producer, and thought shit was made by the artist(yeah it sounds stupid) but after i got more into producing, i found out about producers, and tags are good for recognition, just dont over do it, and as long as it sounds nice/ desireable to the ear, tags are good.
i like female voices.

Man theres so many producers out its almost a necessity now. unless u have ur own artist or a very identifiable sound.

I think name tags are a bit played out, but i think its better when the artist incorporates the producer's name in the song. Like when Gaga says, A REDONE, KONVICT! Or when someone says the producers name in a rap, a la Gucci saying Polow's name......

Its also clever, when the producer doesn't say his name, but has a certain sound like JR Rotem's horns, or The Runners breath sound, and Polows 1-2-3-4 with the marching band drums, or Polows "Wait A Minute MotherF------."

I just think the producer having the same tag in all his beats is old. Played out in a sense. There are more intricate ways to let people know you did the track. Plus, the only thing that really matter is your name in the album and getting those royalty checks. If your song is big enough, for example "WHIP MY HAIR," people will come looking for you.

But then again JR Rotem's J-J-J-J-J-R tag is dope! I think it comes down to whether or not the music is good because you're setting the trends on what's cool when a song becomes a hit. A lot of producers also have signature transitions. Like Drumma Boy's Rise synth (Just Blaze Bite!) and RedOne's awesome signature saxophone lick. And of course Luke/Benny's swoosh, (which I have). Holla atcha boy!

^^^^^^^AGREED!

Might I add, in this day in age of digital downloads, ESPECIALLY illegal ones, you almost NEED it for people to know you did the track. Of course, there was a long period of tiem where everyone had the liner notes from teh CD or Tape they bought and you'd read through it as you listen to the album. Not so much today.

On another note, it is kinda cool sometime when you don't know who produced something for a while and one day you say, who produced that? You look it up and go WOOOOOW. I NEVER woulda guess he did that one. A more recent one for me was Whitney Houston's "Million Dollar Bill" produced by Swizz Beats, written by Alicia Keys or Janet Jackson's "I Want You" produced by Kanye West.

I really don't care much for tags, I think they only should be incorporated into a song only if it is just an instrumental or if it suits that song. If I'm making an R&B song I don't wanna hear Swizzy!!! shouted at the beginning it just throws things off

What about cats like 9th wonder and kanye west who have gained a strong following without the use of a tag?

I think having a signature sound can be way more effective than a tag on every beat.

Plus I think it takes away from the music in a way because it comes repetitive.

And what about producer albums? How are u gonna tag every song on an album, that's lame.

Could you post some examples of these? I'v never heared them.
RedOne's, I didn't realize it was a saxophone til I read Khan's post. I was always confused as to what it was.
It's on the first downbeat of the bar.

Yeah I really don't know what it is honestly lol, but here's another use of it..

Oh wow....didn't realize that was a tag...it's in one of Gaga's songs (not a single) don't know the name off top. ^^^ that one Monster

he uses a similar one in just dance and pokerface aswell

Hahaha i never noticed this. Direct shout outs from lady gaga are not enough for this dude, he needs signature tags in the very same songs aswell haha.

Redone fly as a mother****er lol.

I think it's time for producers to step into the limelight 50/50...

The beat is the most important part of the song.... now.

People are not going to listen to a song if they don't like the beat...

Change it from "I worked with so and so" to "So and so worked with me"... YOU ARE THE REASON THE SONG IS CRACKIN'...

They pick BEATS! nobody picks lyrics (because they don't matter as much... now)

Tell me what's driving that G6 song... the people singing? ? ? you can substitute anybody for them.

Chris Stokes scooped up a 16 year old FP member (true story), we have to put an end to that... we're not "pieces of meat". (I laughed at myself... lol)

Write hooks for your songs too. Hell write hooks for songs you haven't even made. Put on the metronome and spit hooks and put the bpm in the name and save 'em when you make beats again, make beats to your hooks. Get co-writing credit and all kinds o ish.

So the music game is back to being producer driven..? I really thought it switched, but then again I did sit down and listen to that G6 song and asked myself why I liked it a few days ago and it really was because of the beat and the female singing the hook. For that song I think the rappers could've been replaced by anyone and still be a smash.. And yeah it's dope coming out the shower etc. with a fresh 8 bars, so easy to build on!

tags are dope. It is essential in branding your beats. Your silly if you dont have a tag. Listen to what the big producers do and copy it. That's the key to success.
