Rane has done it! Rotary Empath

They had it at DJ Expo. They said the production version would have all the knobs like the 2016a, meaning they would all be the silver metal. I would like one, but I wish it would be a drop in instead of a seperate mixer, because with mixers like the empath, I like to do a whole lot of fader slamming...

aw man, does that mean you have to buy another Empath if you want the rotaries? I wonder if we can mail in our fader Empaths to Rane and have them retrofitted...
 
Yeah, I was a little bummed too. I wish the empath or the Xone 92 were switchable. It seems like the only mixers that are switchable have rotary pots as an afterthought and they are usually not too great...
 
Emailed Rane... they said while technically possible, it's a rather detailed and time-consuming process to make the switch - it's not just swapping the faders to rotaries.

No promises made as to whether or not this service would ever be provided at the factory, but it would have to be done @ Rane, and the cost would likely be in the neighborhood of $400.
 
call me a newb, but whats the advantage of a rotary mixer?
 
Smoother mixes. It's a combination of two factors:
  • Humans have a much finer degree of motor control rotating the wrist vs. a pushing or pulling motion.
  • Rotary pots have a linear progression, vs. the nearly exponential curve on standard faders.
ie when turning a rotary pot, the volume change is the same from 1 - 2 as it is from 9 - 10. On most faders, 0 -4 or even 5 or 6 produces very little change, then all of a sudden, 7 - 10 produces a huge gain in volume. One learns to compensate for this, but it's still easier to do smooth, gradual changes on a rotary. Then there's the sex appeal factor.

Interesting. I've never really thought about this.. Is this true for most linear faders - even the ones with adjustable curves and shyt? I'm not trying to debate here, I'm just curious :)
 
Well, the curve adjustment does just that - allow you to modify the slope: from linear to exponential.

When you have it set to slow, the slope of the 'curve' is linear.

When you have it set to fast, the slope is exponential.

I lack UBB coding skills, otherwise I'd offer to post a couple of graphs. Anyone else feel free to bail me out here.

but for $100, the panel and pots are a good deal for your empaths....

they are just saying that -- anyone with the right screwdriver, pots, and a drill press can do this mod very easily...

even easier is to buy the empath mod kit on ebay referenced above... plug and play baby.....
