I have
a Fantom-S 61 key.
The last time I touched a keyboard before that was when I was 8 years old, I'm 21 now. Yikes.
So I didn't know what I wanted, just something that could sample. Needed a workstation keyboard. I tried it out, and an "old"
Yamaha EX7 I think it was, or 5.. well, I didn't like Yamaha's interface. When I played the Fantom, I fell in love. So I bought it October last year.
Since I'm completely new, this board is a blessing. I had a couple troubles getting started, but honestly - probably 90% of how I learned it was on my own, no manual. That's how straightforward it's interface is. And I love it's sounds, and how I can manipulate them, and bring my own in. I just LOVE it.
So overall I'm satisfied, I'd just say try one out yourself.
Unfortunately Roland has stopped making them now that they revealed the Fantom-X with full-color LCD, 128 Polyphony and other things. It's basically what the Fantom-S should've been. That unit will retail for like $2000. If you don't need what it offers beyond the Fantom-S you can get the FS cheaper for sure.
