I am under the impression that the s950 has the same sample sound of the mpc60, just with a couple of added features. I've been pretty set on getting an mpc60 for a while, however I just got the chance to buy an mpc1000 for INCREDIBLY cheap (300-400 bucks) and I was wondering if I just used my s950 to sample the drum sounds first and then put them into the mpc1000, would I pretty much be getting the same sound as the mpc60? Thanks.

S950 doesnt sound exactly like an mpc 60, but very similar. Since the 1k is 16 bit, sampling into 1k wont sound the same either.

not sample directly into the mpc1000, but sample first into the s950 to get that 12 bit crunch, and then into the mpc1000 from the s950.

A better way would be to sample into both the MPC1000 and S950 separately, depending on what sound you want for a particular sample. Having all of those outputs available to you will come in handy if you go to a studio. Personally I'm not a fan of unnecessary resampling.

I understand where youre coming from. I think resampling is kinda a pain and I could be doing something a little more constructive, i'm just after a distinct sound and I haven't nessicarly been able to get it yet. But I'm thinking if I can still get that mpc1000 for cheap, I will still get atleast close to what I'm looking for, then with some just minor tweaks here and there, I think I might have it. Also, going the mpc1000 route would obviously offer alot more versatility, as if theres a time when I want nice clean non-12 bit sounding drums, I can do that, where as I can't do that with the mpc60.

And, crazy as it seems, if it doesnt work, I could just....sell it. gasp. Thanks for the idea though, BigRyan.

Yeah all I'm saying is, hook the MIDI out of the MPC1000 to the MIDI In on the S950, and use both.

IMO you have a better setup now with the 1k and S950. You have USB and Support from the MFg on the 1K, there still updating the OS... and you have true 12 bit and can sample across a keyboard.

Stick with whut you got... it's good stuff.

the 6o and the 950 are completely different.the 60 is more a sequencer, with an onboard sampler. the 950 is a straight up sampler. both are 12 bit, but the 60 does not offer any where close to the same features as the 950. I think they even have different d/a converters. get the 950 and use the 1000 to control the s950. Use both for sound, use the 1000 for clear sounds like maybe string hits or something you want to sound clear. use the 950 for the 12bit glory, use it on drums, it won't come out clear it will be alittle distorted, but it will sound great.
To set it up map out the keygoups on the s950 and use the corispoding (I can't spell)pads[notes] to trigger the s950 via midi. Check out Akai's website for the manuals, the s950 is in their vintage files

Keep in mind that the 1000 and 60, have completly different sequencers. The 60 has more swing and different clocking.

The nice thing about the S-950, is that it has a filter, where the 60 does not, plus there is just so much more Sample Editing features on the S-950 then the 60. You'll get the 12bit sound, but still get some modern abilities such as CrossFade Samples and Timestretch...

Also, the S-950 has Keygroups for it's programs, not just Drum Programs like the 60, so you can take 3-4(or more) samples of keyboard and lay those out across the keyboard, and you can then play keyboard parts. So will open you up to things that neither the MPC60 or MPC1000 is able to do ...

Also, the S-950 will load S-1000 disks and Programs/Sounds, so will also give you access to a very large library of sounds, as the S-1000 used to be older defacto sampler standard...

Cheers,

Dave
