I don't really know the difference, I'd like to know what it is.

Hardstyle is a variation of hard trance, with a slightly techno edge to it. Still has huge hook lines though, like trance. And plenty of cheesy movie quotes...

"proper" techno is fairly minimal, doesn't have much reliance on melody, is very rigid in structure and is all about the 'groove'.

Simply (and this is an oversimplification) techno is for nightclubs and hardstyle is for dayclubs (those dirty little clubs that open when the nightclubs close in the morning..)

Hardstyle is pretty much hard trance taken to the nth level, and like any good idea taken to the extream is a little silly.

Techno, is as Vexa says all about the groove.

This is hardstyle https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UZAfSD1Misw

This is Techno https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7bLanIfR13A

But techno is such a huge genre this is also techno https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XQYz3QUyKOI

As a rule of thumb if its not house or trance is usually techno, the genre for everything you can't categorise.
