I'm checkin out youtube and there's this techno, trance, electronica(all sounds the same to me) dj named Tiesto. This dude's flyin across the country rockin sold out shows, and not just shows, ARENAS. He got people goin bonkers and jumpin around and carrying on.

What makes this guy so special? What exactly does he do? Is he just mixing other people's records onstage? Is he makin his own beats? Is he a vj? Why is this guy so massively popular???

I'm a hip hop dude so I know little about electronica and what exactly those dj's do. I think Funkmaster Flex is the most popular dj in hip hop history and I've never seen him rock sold out stadiums all over the world.

He is Trance DJ and he is making his own stuff mostly. Now, im a hip hop dude as well, but a few of my close friends are trance dudes, so i sometimes listen to Tiesto.

I hope this live performance will help u recognize his abilities. I think u can take 5 minutes of your time to watch this. It's a song "Traffic", it's worth of watching

^^^Oh, I've watched alot of Tiesto performances including this one with that youg ass I Love NY t-shirt. It's just I've never seen a dj do packed arenas by himself and everybody is watching the dj instead of just dancing. I'm guessing he has different instruments on all those records because I don't see a computer with Ableton Live anywhere nearby. lol. I wonder how come hip hop dj's don't do these kind of shows?

They do. Look up videos of Kanye West's "Glow in the Dark" tour. It's pretty much like that.

His amazing use of three or four songs cleverly remixed thousands of times over ten years is what makes Tiesto so popular.

He's a pretty good producer, but its mainly techno = the universal language = no matter what language you speak, you can feel or understand techno = bigger better world wide market = bigger DJ or producer!

Hip Hop is mainly in the USA, it was founded here and all the other countries try to replicate what we have, but its never going to be the same in any other language or not by a black mans voice... so to say.
I've grown up with actual hip hop in my life, DJing, MCing, Tagging, and Break dancing, and I understand it fully and love it to death!
Rap is okay and basically destroyed Hip Hop's true art form of battling and expressing ones skills as a true art form.
But I like it all, seriously though, the rap market is 90% black guys that have lived in the streets of the US. This being said: you're not going to find the US streets in Africa, although it may be just as hard? IDK-

Anyway, just my thoughts.
Techno will always be bigger.

Techno doesnt use words a lot, so its basically what you make out of the track for yourself. What you think it means could be something totally different of how another person feels about the track, this is due to NO VOCALS influencing you to think a certain way. Let your mind be free and think what it wants.

I used to be a trance guy and listened to him alot. He was a dj first and then became a producer. What made him so good was his choice of tracks, and the way he mixed them. Most electronic djs just go from one record to the next, but he would know his music, and would blend the records in the middle or in some other creative way. The other thing he uses very well is build up. With the right song and the right mood, thats how he gets a stadium packed with people moving.

Other thing to note , IMO, is that trance is a very big genre. Even in the production aspect of it, the synths are heavy on reverb and echo, and having an equally large area just makes it even better.

If you really want to see large venues, check out Sensation. They have two versions. White and Black. White is more trance / happy music, whereas Black is more dark trance. Just youtube it up.

1. Harmonic Mixing.
2. Bandwagon Effect.
3. The fact that the US is far from the center of youth music culture that does not talk about guns.
4. His performances merge familiar big name electronic tracks (for the populist side) with tons of pre-release tracks and remixes for the aspiring DJs.

Being that I don't know any trance stuff, in that video, did he mix more than one song?

i dont see how teisto is a sell out? only DJs say that how? dude dose what he likes to do and dose it well! Hes a Dj and a producer so hes good at finding the best tracks point blank and making the best tracks point blank. He knows how to blend the right tracks together AND pick the right tracks. He knows how to make the right tracks as well.

He Has themes for his cds their actual albums rather then a mix sort to say.

his performance is impeccable

1. He makes tracks that are pretty popular in the dance music world.

2. He's fairly good and developing a dj set.

3. He's in the right market place. Remember the first rule of business, LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION.

4. Great marketing.

5. Being in the right place at the right time.

I think it comes from back in the day. But that is a black hole of an answer that has been debated on many fourms. Not to many DJs actually like him.

i'm not a fan, but i recently saw tiesto play between sets of the disco biscuits. The reason he sounds so good is because the quality of producing is phenomenal. His mastering and EQ make his tracks superior to 90% of the stuff you hear, and most ppl don't pick up on this directly, they just feel it i think

Tiesto is popular because Dance/House/Techno is the most listened to (for listened to read sheeped) music on the planet! His production stands out a million miles from the vast majority of Techno/Trance producers whose tracks can often feel like drowning in wallpaper paste (Deadmau5) or the ultra cheesy Euro-House producers who have made it their god given task to apply the same s****y singers with the same s*****y lyrics to every tune ever!
2 tracks of Tiestos that stand out are "Traffic" which i believe someone has posted on this thread and his remix of the "Barbers Adagio for Strings"... Put one of those tunes on close your eyes and picture them going off in the middle of an arena packed with 10000+ people.... Thn you will realise why Tiesto is so popular with the raving masses...

i am a big deadmau5 fan
but tiesto is the better Dj definetly
