backpack rapper-
Person who dislikes Mainstream and Commercial rap a lot.
Person who raps about real life **** that only matters to them and has been experienced, but not dwelled on by everyone. Rarely about pimping hoes/having millions/selling immense ammounts of drugs/murdering random people for no apparent reason or motive, but often do these things in real life. Person who is fake as everyone else while rapping but convinces consumers he uses his head and heart to write not only a pen and meaningless words.(Reference Nas and Kelis fighting prostitutes they didn't pay, Common beating up fans, Lupe's drug dealing label CEO, Kweli being caught in love triangles and getting smacked around by women he was cheating on).
Bsically, a backpacker is a cat that spends most of his/her time traveling through public transit because they can't afford carsa and make excuses like they don't drive to help the eco system. theyre a huge fan of music but mostly stuff they think is hot, don't take the time to listen to wide varieties of hip hop, they just call the stuff they don't like "Mainstream" and say it's not "real hip hop" they have no greater grasp and focus on lyrics, they just think people are more lyrical if they talk about sh*t people who ride the bus and have no money or women talk about. that kills time while their traveling on the bus, subway, etc. they dont have the money to be rolling in luxury cars, etc. so when you come across a backpacker, theyre usually more of a lyrical cat because all they have is a walkman and a grip of cd's in their backpacks. with a walkman, youre usually more focused on words rathers than beats and hooks. thats why most backpackers are considered more into the underground hiphop scene. you usually find backpackers in inner cities because public transit is cheap, and to get from point a to point b isnt that far of a route.

Nas Songs that are "club friendly, ready made, duplicating, same formula garbage"crabtwins said:Phuk'd up you make some good points and obviously know a little somethin about the sea/pool/history of emcee's out there. But I don't think of nas as a backpacker. BUT labels and pigeon holes aside when he talked about ******* or hoes there was sooooooo much more going on in his lyrics. To say that cause the word ***** or hoe or motherf'r is in a song makes it the same as all this club friendly, ready made, duplicating, same formula garbage that has been coming out is a stretch (IMO).
Very true when you're talking about songs like "I gave you power" where Nas spoke as if he was a gun, or even Eminem's songs about killing his wife, but that's completely different than fabricating your personality and beliefs to sell a record.Bud Bunner said:There is nothing wrong with enjoying the lyrical side of things more, but real music fans will respect the commercial side aswell.
you can write about bling, hoes, weed and cars...but do it in a more lyrical way
Theres also nothing wrong with puttin yourself in someone elses shoes for a verse.
Ive wrote about kids in iraq, am i one? ive wrote evil ****, im not evil
its all concepts, its writing...you can write about things that are going on in the world doesnt have to be goin on in your world.
