what's the difference between and artist, songwriter of composer?

I guess the simple answer would be:

Songwriter = writes the song
Composer = composes melodies etc, and decides on what insruments to use ets.
Artist = person who performs the song (the face of it all)

Would you consider there to be a difference between Songwriter and Composer? I don't, but maybe that's just due to my background. Thoughts?

IMO

In musical terms:

An artist is someone who is versed in the 'art' of music. This can be a composer, a songwriter, even the production engineer.

A composer is someone who creates new music.

A songwriter falls under the heading of 'composer' since he/she writes new music whether lyrically or musically.

I think the Lord of Sausages has the most accurate description hereabove...

Sorry Sausage Lord, I answered too fast; SHONDRAE is fully in the business, so I presume he'll definitely know the best !!

And I think he does, in this case.

That makes very good sense, SHONDRAE, since I'm sure some of those peeps on American Idol can't write orchestrated scores (although I hope they have at least a basic understanding of music theory, but who knows?). Thanks for the input and clarification(s).

True...and lets face it, there is a substantial amount of drivel going on...a lot of which I am probably at least partially responsible for having thought about it...

...anyone else got that Friday feeling?:D
