Background Music on the show, "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?"

I was jus watching it today, and i noticed something. I dunno how, but the music on this show seems to control to overall mood and emotion of the show and those watching.

for example, Whenever the contestant is going for alot of cash, and puts in his/her final answer, the music seems to create alot of tension. also, if he gets it correct, the music resolves(?) and it releaves the musical tension, but if he gets it wrong, it somehow feels like it in the music as well. its like a feeling of failure or despair. and even the background music that plays before the question is answered. its very suspense and nerve-wrecking.

Can anyone out there shed some light on how this is done technically? like in terms of intervals, scales, etc. this could be some really helpful knowledge.

Very simple technically. Long, sustained chords. Minor key (well, in a mode really but effectively just minor-harmonised). Subtle string and choir 'aah' sounds.

The biggest tension-builder is the deep, kick-drum-like heartbeat.

I'm referring to the UK version of the show; don't know if the music is different to the US version.
