Cakewalk Sonar 2.2 XL and DirectX 9.0a

I can't seem to install Cakewalk's Sonar 2.2 XL anymore.

During the DirectX 8.x days it was a breeze, but now, with 9.0a, it just won't work. Sonar needs DirectX 8.0 or higher to work, yet doesn't recognize DirectX 9.0a as being higher than 8.0, thus attempting to install 8.0 during setup. When the DirectX 8 setup fails due to my system using a newer version, Sonar exits installation. Is there any way to have Sonar recognize the newer iteration of DirectX?

Thanks!

Rob

Funny, I'm having the exact same problem, I installed 9.0, now Sonar refuses to load, just keeps installing version 8 over and over!! What to do??

There is only one way to do it, and you'll have to be registered users (but of course you are). Go to the support page at cakewalk.com and enter your serial number to download a utility that will install Sonar from the CD for you. You have to have your original installation CD handy to do it.

It's the best way i've seen recently to stop piracy!! hahahaha :victory:

Yep, seems they made it more accesible. That's good, but you still need your installation disk handy to run the direct x 9 utility.

I am having a similar problem. I am trying to use Cakewalk Sonar 2.2 XL DEMO from CM magazine and after the installation finishes it says that "WDM audio drivers have been detected ... kernel streaming blah blah... Legacy non-WDM drivers do not support kernel streaming blah blah..." then it probably does what it says and then... KabooM! It exist with Invalid Page Fault at KERNEL32.dll.
There is a support page at Cakewalk about vivo drivers, avicap32.dll, sfman32.dll (from SoundBlaster Live! which I have)
and renaming and stuff but nothing seems to work. I am running WIN98SE with SB Live! 5.1 and I am at a loss. Reinstalled and everything but it doesn't work. Sorry for the long post. Did anyone else have the same problem?
Thanks

For taar44, was that about directx9.0a for me or the original query? I happen to have dx9.0a and if the dx9.0b solves the problem I'll try it but if you where saying it for the original poster...

That solution was directed towards anybody having problems with 9.0a. Wierd things after installing 9.0a have been solved for some people by installing 9.0b.

There is also a new virus that can be hidden in midi files, DX 9.0b is the only version so far immune. Midi files can be embedded in webpages, so you don't even have to download it to be infected.

DX 9 fix

Well I installed Direct X 9.0b and that did not fix the solution, but what I did find on another board is that if you go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/MICROSOFT/DIRECTX
and locate the Version key, write down what's in there, then change the value to 4.08.01.0810 and run the setup, it will work fine. Then once setup is complete, change the Version key back to what it was before.. It's a little easier to do than Cakewalk's fix.

Are you serious? You honestly think that going into your registry and mucking around is easier than using a simple little installer, that works by the way I have tested it myself. I feel sorry for anyone that goes and does what you just said and has no clue of what they are doing and stuff everything up (probably because they dont have an original Sonar installation disk).

well I am sonar user and the Cakewalk installer did not with with my ORIGINAL Sonar 2.0 cd.

A more detailed version of what Promediatech suggested is:

1) Click Windows Start button
2) Run regedit
3) Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/MICROSOFT/DIRECTX
4) Double click "Version" and make a note of version number (or copy it to a blank text editor page)
5) Change it to 4.08.01.0810
6) Install Sonar
7) Go back to steps 3) and 4) and change "Version" back to the number you noted down

Of course, messing with registry entries could cause problems if you don't know what you're doing but if you follow these steps and don't change anything else, it should work fine.

Matt,

I feel sorrier for someone who finds editing one registry entry too difficult or dangerous. Mucking around? We were given a specific registry entry. And the windows registry's been around for years, so most computer-savvy individuals should have little trouble editing one entry, or even many. Hey BTW, where's your signature image, and why's your site down? In case someone wants more of your good advice...

By reading that one help line, I was able to solve my problem - no download, no patch, no registration hassles, etc. Most tweak tools edit the registry, anyway, so if you download anyone else's tweak program, you can't be sure exactly what you're getting. At least I know which entry I edited.

Thanks ProMediaTech. I appreciated it!

I really don't think so. Can you link us to any sources that warm people of that?

An update to DirectX9.0b is not a patch against a virus. That would be issued separately as a hotfix.

If anyone really wants a directx 9 uninstaller:

http://www.3dcenter.de/downloads/directx-dx9uninstaller.php

Use at your own risk. I have used these succesfully in the past but your results will of course vary.

If you wish to look for uninstaller for other versions, go to any search engine and type "directx (whatever version here) uninstaller" without the quotes of course. I use Yahoo, but google and other engines should also work well.
