i've been really feelin the kayne west style lately. if you don't have that CD..u gotta pick that up. but i was wondering? are there chord changes in hip hop or does it more or less hang on the same chord? like in change clothes by the neptunes...it kinda sounds like they have like a 2 chord sequence. i'm just confused but was wondering are changes standard in hip hop/rap? someone help me out...

um listen to the song and u tell me if there are any chord changes... simpe

A lot of hip hop doesn't have any chord progression but this is not a rule. Because hip hop is based more around the drums and vocals that are not sung, chord changes aren't as important as the feel, groove and bump.

Now if you want to know if you should use chord progressions then I would suggest that you do. It will make you a more complete songwriter/beatmaker especially if you want to dabble in RnB, Rock, Jazz etc.

But even doing something without a progression can be satisfying. So do what feels right and don't be afraid to try to push your boundries a lil bit.

Look at 2pacs music for a clear example of chord progression and more Music than a beat.

i have an idea but what exactly is chord progression. and whats a chord?

a chord is more than one note played at the same time. a chord progression is 2 or more chords in a row. period
