i work with fl studio 8 and i like it and all but for some reason i dont get that itch to work with it (i think cuz i use a computer all day at work) but anyway i was wondering about everyones thoughts on the way fl manages your files. it sucks that any audio that you use for a beat gets stored in some folder and takes up a grip of memory on the computer. and if you go back and delete these files from the folder to make room, it erases the audio inside your beat even though you have the beat saved. i am almost out of hard drive space cuz of this. just looking to see how you all deal with this and how you manage your files. loops is dope but im thinking bout copin an mpc and goin the hardware rout. let me know your thoughts

Audio? Like vocals? Or just samples?

First off for vocals every DAW does this. It's kept in the project folder, so everytime I make a new one I make the project on my 1.5TB external harddrive. You really need a big hard drive if you want to store the vocals for songs.

If your just talking about, drum samples or little sound FX or whatever...how small is your harddrive?

ya im talking about samples since i use records to make beats. it is saving to my computer harddrive right now and i think i only got like 60 gigs or somethin but i have an external harddrive that is much bigger but cant figure out how to get fl to save to that instead

How long are these samples? Like full records you mean?

If you want them to save to an external drive just "Save As" in a folder in the external drive. I think thats how it works. FL studio is definatly lacking in that department. Most other daws make you create a folder before you even start your project.

try saving your projects as zip files then FL will keep all your project files and audio in the one place. then you can move it onto your other hd and free up space.

na not full records more like a few bars here and there so not very much. i cant do the save as thing cuz fl automatically stores these pieces of sound into a seperate folder other than my project beat file

even though chopped samples are usually sent to sliced beats folder, if you save your project as a zipped file it should save all data used in a project to the zip. if your not to sure if itll work make quick a quick beat with your usual settings and see what happens. you might have to browse into the zip folder manually to see the files

i know that once you make a beat you can export as a zipped looped package and that keeps all your sounds together but then if you delete said sounds from sliced beats folder and load up your beat to play in fl all the sounds are gone so you have to go and insert each sound individually back into your beat. pain in the a**

ah i see what you mean now, when i use samples like loops etc i usually load them as audio clips on the playlist then cut & stretch them there. i rarely use the slicer or granulizer for chopping up audio. mightnt be the quickest method but i like doin things that way and rarely gives me trouble.

so you dont have a problem with storage issues and all those samples being saved to the sliced beats folder? do you record samples from external such as records or what? this is a frustrating thing and just thinking bout grabbin an mpc and switchin over

when i use samples whether vocals or loops etc as audio clips i save my projects as zips and once i see them in the zip i delete the original files if i have no more use for them. then when i try reloading the project i never get warnings about missing files, FL just takes a bit longer to load up the project.

so you are not exporting it as a zipped loop package you are just merely saving the beat as a zip? is that an option in the file tab? and so after you save it as a zip and then delete all the originals from the sliced beat folder, you are able to load up your beat and it still plays the same as before you deleted the originals?

i save it as a zipped loop package like FL normally lets you do. i just bypass using a slicer to cut up my samples by doing it manually using the knife tool :)
there is more likely an easier solution (try granulizer instead) but i dont work with samples too often, i tend to compose everything where possible

oh aight im have to try saving it like that. i chop it up manually too i just use edison to record in my samples then manually put in markers and drag it to slicer and record it in

i usually record the raw audio in audacity, reaper or through a mixer channel direct to the playlist, then once i have a sample to work with i usually cut it up in FL and do the rest of the work there.
if i remember correctly i had a similar problem to you before so i just stopped using slicers etc and now i rarely get hassle. try it yourself i guess and see how you get on

ya man i will definatly try that. i mean i already know fl pretty well so it would be kinda hard to switch it all up and try the mp

No don't really have a problem with it. I use slicex or fl slicer for samples, so each chop of my beat isn't stored in a separate file. Uncompressed audio takes up a lot of storage space, get an external drive or at least upgrade your internal hard drive space.

In FL9 & above you can set a project folder for each song you make and all 'sliced beats', recorded samples, etc.. land in that folder instead of the global one.
