FL studio FPC like an MPC + Preset.

Well, I saw a youtube video a while back on how to use the FPC like an MPC with a midi and i found it useful. But i still got a little confused. So i made this to help people here.

1. First, chop your sample, i generally like to chop in 16 beat loops. I use audacity to chop my samples but you can use anything that will let you chop into seperate smaller wav files.

2. Add a Fruity slicer in your project and add the sample, use the setting to chop how to like. I generally like to set the chops to 16 and use the "chop to every beat" setting. this gives me 16 slices for the 16 pads on the FPC.

3. Next add an FPC. I've put a preset on this thread with a blank FPC, there's more info about that below.

4. open both the fruity slicer and FPC at once, sometime you might need to go into "general settings" (F10) and uncheck "auto seect linked modules" to get both to show at once.

5. click each individual slice in the FL slicer and drag them onto the FPC pads. slice 1 / pad 1. etc. NOTE: you can't drag directly from the chop, you need to click the chop, then drag the zoom in view of the chops wave in the FL slicer.

6. Now you can use your midi to play the chops. I use a midi keyboard, but this should work exactly the same way with an MPC.

THE PRESET:

I made this in FL9, i don't know if it will work in others..

I have set the pads to trigger starting with C1 on a midi keyboard.

so it's like -

Pad 1 : C1
Pad 2 : C1#
Pad 3 : D1
Pad 4 : D1#

etc.

I have also set it to cut out the currently playing pad when a new pad is pressed. So you can trigger pads without them clashing with each other.

Here it is; I cant attach it for some reason:

I don't think i missed anything but let me know if anyone needs any help..

this is easier done by leaving the samples tin the slicer and unchecking the time button/light under "INS" in the slicer and then under "MISC" setting the polyphony to 1. BANG! no need for the fpc at all.... each slice will play until end and will cut when another pad is struck.

yes indeed, that is a good trick!

But the FPC handles velocity better and also, each pad can be routed to its own mixer track for extra mixing etc.

The FPC is really under rated. When I used to use FL I always just use to use the Slicex though. If I knew about the FPC then I would of used it.

I agree. I used to chop them up, export them, then reimport them into battery 3. But it took so long and since i found FPC i've never gone back. I even find it easier than usinf recycle back when i used to use reason.

I dunno if thats necessarily true about the velocity thing can that be proven somewhere?....especially since most people are gonna go back and tweak the velocities anyhow....id be less concerned about velocity than just getting your ish down quickly before inspiration escapes you..

Thats just me tho.

Dont get me wrong either...im a big advocate of using the FPC too

I agree with the getting your thing down. I admit, i use the FL slicer quite often too. But i usually recreate it with the FPC later, just because i prefer it in my workflow and the extra tweaking abilities. Either way is fine, i just thought id share this with anyone who likes to use the FPC :)

Gotcha i just figured id expand on what you wrote and show people an easier/different way....this thread should be pretty informative for people at this point.

Yeh bro, it's all good. It's all about teaching each other anyway, everyone has their own little twist on things. Good advice anyway.

I use the FPC everytime I make a beat. If I don't need it for samples, I'll use it for the drums. I made a preset like this over a year ago, I've seen 1 or 2 other people do it too. I don't need it, but thanks anyway. I think everyone should make their own, since some use their computer's keyboard and some use a midi keyboard.

A few years back i posted the first mpc-like preset for the FPC.....would u believe to this day members ask if i still have it? lol

There are a million ways to do this, here's two.

Samples:

Here's what you do. Open the FPC on a empty preset. Make sure you delete all those file/sound names for each pad. Now, set all pads to the same cut number so they interrupt each other. Max out the volume on all pads. Set the FPC to midi learn, and now you can consecutively hit all the keys/pads you want to use to control each one. For example, hit your mpc/mpd pad 1 when you see it wants to "learn" pad one on the FPC. it'll automatically set pad one to control that. Then it'll switch to pad 2 at which point you hit....guess what...pad 2! Do this all the way throughout and you'll have your midi controller set to control the FPC literally in about 5 seconds (yes it's that fast). Now set the FPC as a whole or each pad to route to the same mixer channel. This is the equivalent of routing your sample arrangement to one mixer channel from your MPC. So now you're free to apply whatever plugins/effects to your sample(s).

The only diff with the drum one is, you may not want to set all pads to interrupt each other. that you can do on-the-fly, unless you want to create dedicated drum kits, where you can have closed hats cut off open ones, and stuff like that.

When I want to sample through software completely i use Edison. You're not gonna find a better sample-chopper than that, PERIOD. it does non-destructive editing, and automatically saves everything you ever chop with it into FL's "sliced beats" folder.

Thanks for that man. I wish i knew about the learning thing. Took me ages to change each pad 1 by 1.

Beautiful!!!!! Thank you.

Lol.....and I wasted alot of time doing midi learn one at a time for my padkontrol!!!!!! Thank you.

:)

..
how would i do that??i figured it out a while back but forgot since i dont really use it that much but i been tryin 2 figure it out again lately

If your using the FPC just change the "cut" values in the top right on every pad to 1 & 1. If you want some to continue playing, just change the value to 0, or 2.
