HELLO,
This is a question unrelated to production but im planning on turning my sliding door closet into a sound-proof, recording booth.
the materials im about to use are 2 simple ones, moving blankets and egg cartons.
I know its a ghetto way of doing things but I've only just setup a low, LOW budget home studio and this is the best i can do for now until i get a budget for more professional equipment and accessories.

my question is what is the proper procedures and steps i have to take to setup it up properly? Also, what additional "ghetto" materials do i need for a better booth? Tips and advice are highly appreciated...

Tell me How I had the same set up when i started closet and all my dude lol 1 thing that made a huge!!! difference was insulation the pink stuff they put in the walls when there building homes it's not to expensive and makes alot of difference

as far as material carpet is better then moving mats but if you put carpet on top of the moving mats now your sound proofing you can find carpet on craigslist pretty cheap this help me out alot its all about layers when your doin a low budget set up the more the better in my opinion first put insulation, moving mats then carpet should not cost more then 120 if you really look for good deals on c-list

Dont forget to vote for Bronxsta in the beat battle goin on now it ends in 2 days so get that vote in (the link is in my sig) Good Lookin Out

Hope i helped answer some of you questions

I made a whole vocal booth for like $80. I used 2x4's, drywall, insulation, cloth, and nails. It works awesome. Mc Donald's has drink holders you can hang on your walls for diffusion. And you can make go-bo's and sound panel's for about $20 or so for a couple.

thanks for the advice peoples
but i have a lower than low budget and my only supplies i can get my hands on are moving blankets and egg cartons.......how should i set up the two? egg cartons under the blankets or over im not too sure...

plus also, i have to set up some sort of lighting inthere, and i heard some lights give off a sound when recording. my other question what kind of lamp could i use so i dont get that frequency noise? thanks

Please,please,please...dont do egg cartons....you better off not using the closet and put the mic in a room and hang the blankets around you..you will get less of a boxy woffy sound when you record..Trust me.

If you can get 40 dollars then go to lowes and get a bag of roxul. it has 10-12 slabs of insulation and put it on the walls. and since you have blankets cover it with that by nail or something. fiberglass don't come off unless you mess with it to much because it is dense.
If you cant get roxul..get the pink stuff with the facing and staple it to the walls and use the blankets to cover that.(FACING AGAINST THE WALL)

I do not suggest the pink stuff but if you only had 15 bucks Then get that.
The concept is that the insulation will absorb some of frequency that cause the problems in a small room.
The roxul is the best route.
hope this helps

Yeah, the egg cartons are pretty much all myth - their only contribution towards acoustic treatment is that they kinda look like some acoustic foam types do, not that they actually share any of real foam's properties (of course any material has *some* kind of acoustic properties...but in this case it's more trouble than it's worth). You might just as well put a poster of Grandmaster Flash on your wall and suck the magic raw hiphop energy from that.

You don't want to be confined to a small space after eating all those eggs.

well i have the option to MAYBE get some wood and make a lil 4 piece booth, like ---> |_| [without a back part]
would that be recommended rather than using my closet?

i just tore down my egg cartons. it's done.

Or you could use the old Little Jon Technique and put a mic in between 2 matresses , he said it himself that it work

I had the same question in mind and the advice here seems great. I'm going to try some of these out! thanks.
