I've listened to a k-station before and been very impressed by the sound, and since been tempted to buy one, but I am now fighting between the X station as it is both a synth and a comprehensive MIDI controller.

My question is, are their any substatial differences between the synth engine in the K station versus the X station? Will I be disappointed with the sounds of the x-station if expecting those of the k-station? Do they have identical patches? Can they transfer patches through Sysex like other similar synths (ex. micron-ion)?

I have the feeling that novation pretty much just dropped a k station internals into a remote25, but I'm not certian, and there is no where in the area where I can try both.

the X-Station has the KS synth engine (only with 8 voice polyphony/monotimbral instead of 16 voice/4-part multitimbral). The KS is like the sequel of the K-Station. I heard they re-worked the filters and added some new waveforms, which means it has more sonic possibilities than the K.

The only thing I don't like about the K-Station is the key action (that's its weakest point). It's probably better on the X (since it's semi weighted + aftertouch).. I never tried the X though.

If you don't need the Midi+audio interface of the X, go for the K. It's still a very good VA!

hope this helps

The midi and audio interfaces are a huge plus, but I could buy a much cheaper midi interface if the synth isn't worth a ish

well I'm certainly not buying them both, and no distributer here in the SE US carries Novation products for me to try out before I buy them, so I don't know what way you are talking about.

I meant: try it, didn't mean to offend!

that's too bad..

I personally don't like combos. But I'm pretty sure the KS sounds better than the K-Station. And Novation have packed an 8-voice version of the KS + audio interface + midi controller, all for a great price.

If you want more bang for your buck, go for the X-Station (that's how I see it).

if you're uncertain, buy a used one, try it for a month or so.. if you don't like it, you can always re-sell it and get your money back.

old thread is old

ended up going with the x-station, pretty happy with it, even though I use it as a midi controller for serato more than anything
