Hey everyone. I got this local artist that is paying me to do 3 "neptune like" beats for him. I got one started and it sounds kinda "neptunish" but I'm stuck on which other instruments to choose. I chopped an acioustic guitar and I got a synth that sounds good in there but that's it. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated

listen to bernard purdie .......they nicked of him!!

peace

Neptunes????
Hmmm? I like and hate them at the same time. I was big fan until I got tired of the same beats. I'm talking back in 2000. But, I do like them too.

Just sick of that sound. It's straight raw keyboard beats with no fx to alter the sound. And basically if you wanna sound like them and maybe even go to the next level, study break beats and then, play them....but then add more fx to alter the tonality of the instruments
and maybe even use some samples too.

Oh yeah. Layer your stuff too. Add some other layers of synth under your synth and bass.

Peace.

Use all raw synth sounds (preferably from the triton) like homie said. . .and use technoish sounding leads, but make the leads into stabs and use a pitch bender. It seems to me that this is what they do now on like 75-80% of their beats. Also there are Lots of monosynth samples (usually on keyboards but there are even some in the reason sound bank) that sound neptunish. . .by the way i dont even like the neptunes. Just thought id add that, peace.

If we can hear what you got so far we can be of more help to you. The neptunes got super lazy when they made grindin. Four keys all next to each other in a drum bank on the Triton. Thats the whole song. What kills me is people love that ...beat. I don't even wanna call it a song. Ok I'll put down my glass of Hater-aid now.

hey if something is simple ,can't be good?

I know I probably sound like a crybaby hater. But this is how I realy feel. I do like the neptunes don't get me wrong, but If I were to put out a song like grindin, and post it for everybody to hear, I bet you I'd be getting responses all day long like "good start but you need a melody" or "I like it but you need some effects and a bass line. It still sounds incomplete" I've seen it too many times here, and in studios. But since the neptunes are such a big name and deemed proffesionals, nobody will ever question anything they put out. Somebody is gonna feel it cause its a neptune beat reguardles of the fact they pooped it out in 30 seconds, looped it and went back to sleep.

use some kind of background bongo/conga melody....put a bongo slap under the snares...they do that in EVERY song

I disagree, you can make a good song with a minimalistic beat, if you got 2 hot rappers on it.
I always saw grindin' as a tribute to all the minimalistic 80's hip hop. Run DMC - Sucker Mc's/LL cool J's - Can't live without my Radio and alot of Mantronix stuff, those records are classic hip hop right there. And I wouldnt say that those records were missing anything.
But I guess its a matter of taste though..

thats where you are wrong...Grinding is a complete beat..it doesn't need anything else..a bassline would ruin it

I agree with the name thing tho, if you are big then you can get away with anything, if anyone else put that out they would get slated..I believe the music video adds to it a lot too

neptunes base their songs off groove because they just repeat something over and over but it sounds dope because they have dope drum patterns and normally a great rapper on their beats lol

^well hip-hop is pretty much repetitive and more about the groove init?

more so than any other type of music, because of the rap vocals, they are close and compact unlike a singers
