Ortofon Concorde: DJ-S vs Nightclub

Hey folks,

I looked a bit around, and didn't really see too much as far as this goes, but just wanted to know if anyone had some experience with such.

When I first started about a year ago I picked up a MKII used and 1 new M3D. The MKII came with a Nightclub cart, but the stylus was so hashed I couldn't use it at all.

I found a heck of a deal online for a new DJ-S cart and 3 stylii, so picked such up, and really didn't have any more money to spend (had a mixer from a while back).

I ended up sticking the DJ-S stylus on the nightclub cart, just so I had two working carts. Now that it's time to replace my stylii again, I still have the 1 stylus from the pack of 3, so my DJ cart will get the right needle.

Is it worth the extra money for the nightclub stylus? or should I just save a little more and replace the nightclub cart and go both DJ-S. I don't know if recording it's going to sound odd having the two different types of stylii going from song to song.

thanks!

p.s. I spin pretty much only house, if that makes a difference.

you may hear a slight difference between the dj-s and nightclub styli. Im not too sure on differences you are hearing now but if both sound good to you just keep using the dj-s stylus on the nightclub cart, b/c having carts w/ the same tracking capabilities, sonic characteristics kind of helps.

Heh,

Well it doesn't help I'm gear-whore, so sooner or later I'd replace so everything matches. I ditched the MKII and picked up a second M3d, so I'd just assume have everything matching. But I'm just curious if anyone has used both carts and if there really IS an audible difference.

p.s. the only reason I ask, is up until about two months ago, I didn't think really high end sound stuff made a difference on crap speakers. Apparently, to my surpise, a better mixer even on home stereo or computer speakers CAN make a huge difference.

With Ortofon the actual cartridge body is irrelevant. So the Nightclub cart with the Dj S styli will give exactly the same performance as a Dj cart with a Dj S styli.
If you want to 'upgrade' you'll have to get 2 Nightclub S styli.
Unless you hear them both back to back it's hard to judge whether you need the 'upgrade'.

All Ortofon cartridge bodies are the same, it's the styli that are different. Have i misunderstood something?

Deft!

Thanks. Honestly? I wasn't entirely sure this was the case, as for some reason even with the exact same height and tracking force, the two carts 'feel' different, even with the same stylii. Maybe it's all mental.

I wasn't SURE they were the same, but if that's the case, I guess I can go with my same setup that I have, and just get more DJ-S stylii in a few weeks.

thanks,

Andy/Jer

I've used both, and the difference is minimal. (at least on my setup I couldn't notice a diff...)

Great thread, cuz I've been wondering about the Concordes too. Can anybody tell me the difference in sound? The Concordes are almost twice as much right? I would hope they sound better. (My application is single turntable recording into the computer, so I'm looking for the best sound I can get for recording sample librarys.)

Hey hey,

Actually both the carts in question are Concordes. I was just curious if the Nightclubs were a marked improvement over the the DJ-S.

I personally didn't care for the "OM" style when I used them.

The Concorde design is for aesthetics and ease of use more than anything. I wouldn't expect them to sound any different if an OM cart was set-up in the same way.

I have 3 different sets of concords on my set up. I have the black ones. the pink ones (scratch), and the blue ones (DJ). The blue ones (dj) sound best of these three. The pink ones (scratch) give you more of that scratch sound when you scratch. The black ones are just standard issue. I think the night clubs are better sounding, I am just not sure on how good they track. I have never played on them more then an hour in club conditions. I played on the blues (DJ) where the tables were moving back and fourth from people dancing and they only skiped once. I like the blues (dj).

The black ones have more of a flat sound verses the yellow which have a more hyped, brighter sound.
