Im just wondering as a rapper, how not making your own beats may affect you. Like is it looked down upon or what. How many rappers in the industry are just rappers and dont make beats.

i think more and more rappers are leaning towards making their own beats...

Its not frowned upon..

I think people are just diversifying, covering as many lanes as possible, rapper/singer/producer/actor, one head many hats, thats looking like the way to survive.

The majority of rappers out right now don't make their own beats so I don't think it's looked down upon. With making beats being so accessible now a days I think it will become more common in the future.

Real talk!

As A rapper myself, I started making beats to become a better all around musician.

A lot rappers don't make beats and its defiantly not frowned upon at all. A lot of times when rappers do make beats its because A they can't find beats that fit them or the beats they are receiving from producers are not up to par to what they want to rap to. B they don't want to spend money on beats and would rather just make their own...

rapping is my main stay........but......

this is exactly why i started producing as well. made me feel so much more creative and musical.

Or C. They want the credit of being an all around artist.

I think what may be the downside is if you're on a major label and aren't gettin money like your producers are. I started rapping a year or two after making beats because I pretty much like doing everything...so if I'm big I'll be paid

you gotta respect an artist like black milk or kanye for doing everything.

I don't think it should be frowned on or anything. as long as the rapper has a good ear for picking beats and matching a song they should be good. if not then i don't know maybe the music will be all over the place. Some rappers need to be guided by producers.

It wouldn't hurt to be a jack of all trades though, especially if you do both great.

Yeah your right I know for a fact being that I worked for record labels and studios I see more and more rappers who want to learn. That comes from producers fronting on rappers acting all hollywood. Here's another thing to think about half of these so called super producers don't even make beats. How about getting a check for just doing nothing but saying "Hey who going to the store to get these dutches, yo turn that bass up"!! You gotta love it....lol!!

I never liked rapping on other peoples beats...

Except the one guy that got me into making beats.

Something would always go wrong, like the song wouldn't have the structure I wanted ... or I felt like I was forced to rap about the "feel" of the song instead of what I actually felt like writing about. When I made my own beats, I could arrange them any way I wanted, make them feel how I wanted them to feel.

... seen it a hundred times, dudes rapping on beats trying to force something good to turn out, lol.

When I started out, I learned how to make beats out of necessity...mainly because I was a middle school student and didn't have money to toss at chasing soundclick producers before anything else...so I delved into it head first...I think the practice is becoming more prevalent now tho because of cats like Kanye...I personally like it because I know what I like and what will motivate ME to write...Like I hear other cats beats and think of a million and one things I could switch around to tailor it to my specific style/concept/etc, not knocking anyone else, but there always seems to be an issue of an ill sample or melody and wack ass drums, or hot drums and a real plain melody/sample/loop/w.e...as far as selling my shit...I don't really ever plan on selling my beats unless I desperately need some side money...I wanna keep my shit for myself
