Can someone who ones this sampler or has previously owned explain the pros and cons of this machine because I am planning to purchase this soon? I jsut wanna know what to expect.....

i played with one in a local music store for about 30 minutes.my opinion

pros
+usb connectivity
+very large screen
+pads respond prety well
+swing(sounds very good)
+sequencing is prety tight
+the 36 or somewhat effects. i really like +rolands eqs(from my sp-303)
+includes software
+their made in japan so their built to last very long
+the incorporation of the cf drive
+timestrech

cons
-the 4 track limited sequencing
-limited outputs
-the interface is a bit confusing(im very confortable with the mpc series)nothing the manual wont explain though

imo this piece of equipment does give a lot of competition to the mpc 1000. i would have got this if i couldnt have gotten my mpc.

manual(try flipping through it. you'll see everything you want)

Thanx i appreciate the help... can u explain the limited 4 track sequencing?

i can break it down like this. you can use

track one - drums(kicksnarehihat)
track two - bass sample
track three - violin sample
track four - vocal sample

but in the mpc a lot of people like to sequence

track one - kick
track two - snare
track three - hi hat

and it gives you more of an oppertunity to chang your patterns up with out changing the sequence. thats what i use it for. i like to sequence something all in one sequence and the mute tracks and copy the sequences. but i digress from my point. you can make complete tracks with that sp 606 but you may find yourself a bit limited but not to the point where you cant make dope tracks. hell the sp 303 only has one track sequencing but madlib does hot tracks with it. hes also using this 606 now so we'll see what kinda stuff he comes up wiht.

djobserve, that's a great explanation, pros and cons......good job.

If you are starting out, I wouldn't get the SP606, and I like the machine. I actualy want to get one, but I play guitar and bass. For me, the sp606 would be a sampling drum machine. It's small, so I can take it where ever, and work out my drum pattern. I can plug a guitar, or bass into it, and work out thos parts. then I can hook it up to a laptop, and get drums, guitar and bass down.
But if you want to put together a complete tune, unless you're a DJ, with a complete setup, I wouldn't be looking at the 606.
Now if you go to rolandus.com, you can see the demos, those guys do ok putting a song together, so it can be done. If you've got a computer setup, with softsynths, and a host, then yeah you'll be ok.

Damn it......What sampler would you suggest. I want each sound to have its own track.... And are there any programs that feature a program like the sp-606's On screen feature. Thats so dope and helpful?

i know, that was a big factor that influenced me, but witht his new info u gave me that turned me off from it. Madlib should get another sequencer so he can have more variety....

Which mpc do you have obderv and does it come with software?

for instance you would have to do the hats. then go back and overdub and do the kick and snare. BUT like if you want to mute tracks and take out the snare or kick here with them all on the same track its kind of difficult.

i got a mpc 1000. i hardly use software. not even for editing samples. i try to stick with just the mpc. this doesnt come with software but you can get a free program called audicaity or something to help you edit your samples.

but on the ohter hand i just dipped into using fruity loops. that program is prety sick. i dont mind using that eiher.with audacity as my sample editor.

The software that comes with the 606 isn't really all that. You can do more with an MPC and free samples off the net, so don't let that mickey mouse software sway your decision.
the MC-909s are coming way down in price now, used. for a couple hundred more than a new 606, you can get a 909.

Damn.... Not even the mpc2000?

what do you mean. dont let equipment fool you. a certain oxnard inhabitant makes really fresh beats with a 303..

I agree with thunderkyss, you'd be much better off with a used 909. I had a sp606 and sold it after a few months. The 606 has so much potential, the major limiting factor is the sequencer, and the cakewalk software that comes with it pretty much sucks.

i got one in SOLID CONDITION for sale for $300 in Seattle...

do ya'll think that's a decent price???

comes with the software too...

I've owned a sp606, a mpc500, and a mpc1000.

The 606 was great to turn and and just mess around with. the large screen was a plus, menus were easy to use, everything really user friendly. but when i felt like making a serious song i felt limited, mostly because of the 4 track sequencing and limited polyphony. timestretch sucked too.

i sold it and picked up a mpc500. that thing was pretty impressive, it really made the 606 look like a toy. i gotta recommend the 500 over the 606. the only thing the 606 had over the 500 was the larger screen imo.

i recently sold my mpc500 and picked up a mpc1000. definitely my favorite so far.

i picked up my mpc500 awhile ago basically brand new with upgraded 128mb ram and a 1gb cf card off of ebay buy it now for $350 shipped.

The software that comes with the 606 will let u do all the things u want to do.

really???

on a scale of 1-10, how much do you like the software???
